How to Use the Checker
1. Enter the Product Title
Paste or type the title of your Amazon listing. The counter shows in real time how many of the 200 permitted characters you are using. If you exceed the limit, the field is highlighted in red.
2. Fill in the Bullet Points
Enter up to 5 bullet points. Each has an independent limit of 255 characters. The individual counters help ensure no bullet point exceeds the limit.
3. Check the Search Terms
Backend search terms are measured in UTF-8 bytes, not characters. The tool shows both the character count and the byte count, so you can optimise the available space.
4. Interpret the Results
- Green/neutral counters - The field is within the limits
- Red counters and borders - The field has exceeded the limit and needs to be shortened
Official Amazon Limits per Field
| Field | Limit | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Product title | 200 | characters |
| Bullet point (x5) | 255 each | characters |
| Search terms | 200 | UTF-8 bytes |
Note: The difference between characters and bytes is crucial for sellers who use languages with accented characters. A plain ‘a’ takes up 1 byte, but an ‘a’ with an accent takes up 2 bytes in UTF-8. This means that text in Portuguese, Spanish or French takes up more bytes than the equivalent in English.
Why Check the Limits Before Publishing
Exceeding Amazon’s character limits can have serious consequences:
- Content truncation - Amazon may cut off your title or bullet points, losing important information
- Listing rejection - Listings that exceed the limits may be rejected during submission
- Suppression in results - Products with fields that exceed the limits may lose visibility in search
- Loss of keywords - Search terms exceeding 200 bytes are completely ignored by Amazon
Tips for Optimising the Fields
Product Title
- Include the brand, the product name and the main features
- Avoid unnecessary repetition and special characters
- Use your most important keywords in the first 80 characters (visibility on mobile devices)
Bullet Points
- Each bullet point should focus on one specific benefit or feature
- Start with the most important information
- See our Amazon bullet points guide to maximise conversions
Search Terms
- Do not repeat words already in the title or bullet points
- Separate terms with spaces (do not use commas or semicolons)
- Include synonyms, spelling variations and related terms
- Be careful with accented characters, which consume extra bytes
