How to Use the Calculator
1. Enter Your Advertising Spend
Enter the total amount spent on Amazon PPC advertising (Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands or Sponsored Display) during the period you want to analyse. Select the currency corresponding to your marketplace.
2. Enter Your Revenue
Fill in the revenue fields:
- Ad Revenue - The total value of sales generated directly by your ads
- Total Revenue - The total value of all sales of the product (organic + advertising). This field is optional but required to calculate TACoS
3. Analyse the Results
The calculator shows three main metrics:
- ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sale) - The percentage of advertising spend relative to ad revenue. Formula: (Advertising Spend / Ad Revenue) x 100
- RoAS (Return on Ad Spend) - The return for each euro invested in advertising. Formula: Ad Revenue / Advertising Spend
- TACoS (Total Advertising Cost of Sale) - The percentage of advertising spend relative to total revenue. Formula: (Advertising Spend / Total Revenue) x 100
Colour-Coded Performance Indicators
The results are presented with visual indicators to make them easy to interpret:
| Metric | Green (Good) | Yellow (Acceptable) | Red (Attention) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACoS | Below 30% | Between 30% and 50% | Above 50% |
| RoAS | 4x or higher | Between 2x and 4x | Below 2x |
| TACoS | Below 10% | Between 10% and 20% | Above 20% |
Note: These thresholds are guidelines and apply to most categories. Products with very high margins can tolerate a higher ACoS, whilst products with slim margins require a lower ACoS to remain profitable.
Why These Metrics Matter
Monitoring ACoS, RoAS and TACoS together provides a complete picture of advertising performance:
- ACoS alone can be misleading - A 40% ACoS may seem high, but if your profit margin is 60%, the campaign is still profitable
- RoAS makes comparisons easier - Expressing the return as a multiplier (e.g. 4x) simplifies evaluation across different campaigns
- TACoS reveals the halo effect - If TACoS falls whilst advertising spend stays the same, it means advertising is driving organic sales - a sign that the strategy is working
Organic vs Advertising Revenue Analysis
The calculator includes a breakdown section that shows:
- Organic revenue - The difference between total revenue and advertising revenue
- Advertising revenue percentage - What proportion of your sales depends on ads
- Advertising dependency - If more than 70% of revenue comes from ads, the product may be too dependent on paid advertising
A healthy split for established products generally sits between 30-50% advertising revenue and 50-70% organic revenue.
